Unit 2

It's just a jump to the left...

Don't Settle For Less

5/22/2009

I don't have anything interesting to say, except that I'm starting more plot development for the next comic. I said the wait between the story arcs wouldn't be as long as last time, so if all goes well the comics will finish in time for Sunday!
~Ryan Stevens

Artwork 3

5/19/2009

Two unrelated pieces for you today, the first is a redrawn version of a background image in an older oamic. It is named after the point at which light can no longer escape from a black hole, its the border at which absolutely no information can pass through, ever, no matter what. If you passed the event horizon, nobody would ever be able to know what had become of you, but they could still send information into the black hole to let you know about them. The annoying problem, however, is that the gravity is so strong at this point that your feet would be sucked into the hole much, much, much, much more strongly than your head, and you would be torn apart. This may be the last thing you see.

The second is just an observation about software company logos, that they are all four square color combinations of red, blue, yellow, and green. Real original. I really hope Google dosn't get mad at me for this, after all they supply my ads and track visitor stats for this website. Whatever, they will either get over it or change their logo.
~Ryan Stevens

Mortism

5/17/2009

I'd be willing to bet people are wondering where the title of this comic came from. "Mortism" is a word I made up, and its definition is related to racism and sexism. Mortism is discriminating agianst an individual or group of individuals based on whether or not they are alive. It is a very serious matter, mortists have been known to commit horrible attrocities against the dead (who prefer to be called Lifeless-Americans), which include burning them not alive, sealing them in a box, or burying them in the ground. They have an almost no opportunities in the workforce to hold down a job, own a house, or raise a family; many mortists don't even consider them human anymore. THE TIME HAS COME PEOPLE TO STAND UP AGAINST DEAD DISCRIMINATION!

I really hope nobody takes any of the above seriously.

Caffine On Crack

5/15/2009

I don't know how obvious it is to the average person so I'm just going to say it: crack is cocaine. Normally having to explain a joke is a good indication that it is'nt very good, but I had to make an exeption; I don't think that a straight-edged person would necessarily have known otherwise. Actually, just to be more precise: crack is a kind of cocaine in crystal form, and can be smoked or injected as opposed to snorted. Its less pure than freebase cocaine and has a less intense rush, but the subsequent high lasts longer. Crack is also more freequently cut with cheaper chemicals so it is less pure. The white powder that you see in movies is pure freebase cocaine and is much more expensive than crack (actually, the white powder you see in movies is probably flour, but you get the idea).

More Wii'd

5/12/2009

Oops, missed posting on Sunday. I'm not sure how I forgot, but I did, so its going up today. This ends the short little story arc about the Wii'd. I have more plot development in store, but I have some random comics I want to do first.
~Ryan Stevens

Wii'd

5/8/2009

I really enjoy this comic, the characters have good expressions and gestures, the back wall is nicely textured, and the shadows are dramatic. Despite this my favorite part by a longshot is the picture in the background. I drew it very late one night after some drinking and had almost forgotten about it until I opened the image the next day. I think it would look good as a standalone piece, I'll probably draw it larger in the near future, so look forward to that. I think I'm going to call it "Event Horizon", which is basically the distance at which light can no longer escape from the gravity of a black hole. Well, actually that is a specific case, event horizon has a more general definition. I'm not in the mood to go into more detail though cuz I just took a quantum physics midterm today.
~Ryan Stevens

AB 390

5/5/2009

Yay, new comics! The new story arc has started, it is only three comics long, but it ought to be good. Despite the title of this comic, it has nothing to do with California Assembly Bill 390, the bill to legalize weed in California. Also, I sincerely doubt that Microsoft actually endorses 390, it would be super cool if they did though. Bill Gates seems like the kind of genius who smokes weed.
~Ryan Stevens

Technically, Infinity Isn't A Number

4/19/2009

My inspiration for this comic came from here, which is basically an article about the history of really big numbers. The original huge number used a notation that looked like: 3^^^^3, which is 3^3^3^3. Obviously that number is very large, so lets call it x. Now take x and put that many carats between the three's ie: 3^^...(x)...^^3. NOW THAT NUMBER IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS. I think it still might be smaller than mine, but w/e, at least now I can totally win against my little cousin when he says: "Yeah, well I'm as smart as you times a million!". "Oh yeah, well I'm as smart as you times 3^^...(x)...^^3!"
~Ryan Stevens

Works Every Time

4/17/2009

Let me say that when I sketched this comic originally, I intended for the people who knocked on the door to be Jehova's Witnesses, however, I couldn't find a name for them in the format: "Church of ________". My solution was just to change them from being Jehova's Witness to Mormon so that it sounded better. I mention this because I don't want to attack any sect of Christianity more than any other; I hate them all equally. Except for maybe Catholicism, since I used to be Catholic, I have a special cold, dead place in my heart for the religion.

I also wanted to mention something I touched on in last comic's commentary. I want the webcomic to have a dynamic art style that progresses and (hopefully) improves with time, but doesn't seem to go anywhere in particular. The comic is meant to be psychedelic so drawing it this way will keep it from being too boring or looking all the same. I hope I can keep coming up with ideas that fit into this free-form framework.
~Ryan Stevens

Taquitology

4/14/2009

I decided that the webcomic is going to have a wandering art style based on my whim when I draw it. I began the next story arc, which is looking pretty good, I'm very excited to post it (hopefully starting next week). Also, I decided to stop starting the title of these news posts with "New Comic: " because all of them are new comics now. I just don't post news until I release my next comic, so yeah, I realized it was a silly habit.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: I Might Be On To Something...

4/12/2009

I wonder how large the market for joint papers with Bible quotes on them would be. At least you could have a more direct union with God than Christianity offers, hell if you smoke enough you just might see Him. Imagine it: they can come in all kinds of flavors: Leviticus, Numbers, Revelations, Romans, etc. A pack would have all the quotes from the book printed on papers, one at a time. You would be able to read your favorite book from the Bible one joint, er, line at a time. They can even have special papers to roll cross joints, hahahaha. And its Easter Sunday today, oh the irony.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Now I Feel Bad For Laughing

4/10/2009

Ah the bike accident: painful, embarrasing, usually harmless, and always fun to watch. I go to a very bicycle-dense college, so I've seen my fair share of two-wheeled collisions. Around 10 o'clock the bike lanes heading in and out of campus get so jam-packed, I actually have to wait in bike traffic. Since there are no police to regulate the lanes, however, bold bicyclists will try cutting through roundabouts or going up the opposite lane to save time. Nothing feels better than watching someone think they are beating the system and getting ahead of everyone have their plans foiled by causing a seven bike pileup. Maybe I'm a horrible person for laughing, but I think people who find humor in everything tend not to do horrible things.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Bar

4/7/2009

When I originally made the webcomic, I intended for the characters to be about 19, maybe 20, but unfortunately this comic means that Ari and Aaron are definitely older than 21. I make no comment about the ages of the other characters though. Also, there has been some not-so-subtle website rennovations, which include: a new background, image links instead of text, and the day's news at the bottom of each comic. Hopefully those ads won't all be about drug rehab facilities now.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Maybe I Should Be President

4/5/2009

What!? I'm changing my style AGAIN!? Sorry if I'm confusing everyone, but this is a free-form webcomic of sorts, so I'm allowed. The cool new shaded ones take much too long to draw and my ideas are backing up, so I'm making these to help fill in the gaps. Yeah, so, there will be more like these to come, yay. ALSO, there will be website updates in the future, I'm thinking that some buttons are in order. Also, the ads don't display content I like very often, so I think I'm gonna add these news posts to their corresponding comics.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Food For Me, None For You

3/29/2009

Alright, yeah, I wasn't able to post a comic on Friday, I spent all day recording with my band and had no time. I decided to stop updating the RSS feed, so don't bother checking it anymore, I don't think it brings very much traffic to the website. I'm not going to dismantle it quite yet, I will just stop updating it.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Now With More Pulp!

3/24/2009

It was a good deal of work, but this new comic is both well-drawn and shaded! I'm quite proud of it, although the actual joke in the comic is kinda lame. Anyway, I'm going to be drawing my comics like this from now on so I hope everybody likes it. I don't see why someone would be against a superior look, but you never know, right?
~Ryan Stevens

Unit Two Artistic Crit

3/22/2009

To be honest, this is just some filler I made because the newest comic is coming along slower than expected. I decided I would point out some of the more recent flaws in my comics for shits and giggles, since some are pretty awful. The next one will be awesome though, very tablet driven and easy on the eyes. If your wondering what the secret message is, it says "Worship Satan".
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Welcome To Mc Donalds

3/20/2009

This comic is different than all of the others, can you tell why? Thats right, its because I drew it with a tablet. Ok, I'll actually try to utilize the tablet better for the next comic, I was just using this one to get used to it. I really don't have anything against Mc Donalds, I just used it because I feel like Mc Donalds is subject to a great deal of social critism, so I felt it was an appropriate setting.
~Ryan Stevens

More New Artwork Posted

3/17/2009

Ok, so, no new comic today, but I'm still posting some old artwork I had lying around on my computer. Its been busy at school with finals, so I haven't made any new comics, I'll definitely have one for Friday though. The artwork today is kind of large, and is a horizontal scroll, so don't hate me too much for it. I suppose it has some kind of underlying message depending on how you interpert it. Some alternative titles include: 'Shroom Cloud, Atomic Heart, and I Swear I Don't Love Weapons Of Mass Destruction!!!
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Excuse Me Mr. Koopa? 2

3/15/2009

Oh yeah, this is the sequel of an old classic. The first one was the third comic I did, yet it is still one of my favorites. I guess sequels can be considered a cheap cop-out from any artist, but this one is only mildly related to the first one, so I think I'm safe. If you hadn't noticed by now, whenever I go on break then come back, I change my comic posting rhythm. First it was two new ones in a row then a break, then it was every other day, this time I'm posting new comics every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday. Although I'm actually posting new artwork this coming Tuesday and not a new comic.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: A Good Bad Pun

3/13/2009

Happy Friday the 13th everyone! Its time for a new comic, this one takes place outside! The new comics should be posted every Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday for this block of comics. Hopefully I will be able to make a good amount of random ones for the new characters. Lately, website popularity has been down, so please tell your friends about the site if you like reading them. I added a Stumble and Digg button to each comic page, so it should be super easy to help promote the comic, just give either a click. Always working hard to save you guys unneeded clicks. Evenetually I'm going to add an archive link to each comic page, and design some buttons for the links. All in due time. The background for this comic turned out pretty well, its relatively psychedelic, which is always a goal for the comic.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: The Fatal Flaw In Organization

3/10/2009

Its time for some more random comics with the new characters. I decided that Jennifer needed to be redone, so I made some changes to her. Mike is also going to get a slight makeover, along with some of the background artwork.
~Ryan Stevens

New Artwork Posted

3/1/2009

Some new artwork, I have posted. Its all very basic, but at least it gives a hint of some artistic ability right? I guess it would be watercolor-inspired, except it was made entirely on a computer and I have no knowledge of real watercolor technique. I hope these pictures add to the overall tripiness of the comic, after all, it is a psychadelic webcomic. I have some more non-comedy inspired art that I will post sporadically when the comic slumps, so stay tuned for it.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Replacing The Ghost Pt. 7

2/25/2009

The great roommate fiasco comes to a close, ending the story that revolved around Valentine's Day. I'm going to go on a break for a bit in order to make some more material, recently school has been getting more hectic with final projects and whatnot. Hopefully I will be able to get new comics up in a week or two, but no later than that. Thanks for reading everyone.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Replacing The Ghost Pt. 6

2/22/2009

The plot thickens and the title grows! Check out today's comic to find the answer to the mystery of how Luke died!
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Replacing The Ghost Pt. 5

2/20/2009

Now begins the two comic long story of how Luke died. If it seems familiar the story is based loosely on Romeo and Juliet, only more absurd. Hope you guys like it.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Replacing The Ghost Pt. 4

2/18/2009

I found this article a little while ago, I think it is hilarious: Urban Dictionary: Ryan Stevens. I'm really looking forward to the next few comics, but drawing them is taking a bit longer than expected. Hopefully they will be done by Friday so that I can post it on time.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Replacing The Ghost Pt. 3

2/16/2009

I wish I would've found this article on Valintine's Day, but its still funny. Its a list of the ten worst video game girlfriends. Of course Peach is on it, she is the classic needy bitch that Mario works so hard to keep unkidnapped. I don't know why Navi is on the list, she is definitely not Link's girlfriend, but I think Zelda would be pissed if she found out.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Replacing The Ghost Pt. 2

2/14/2009

Happy Valentine's Day everyone. I bet you were wondering who that new guy was from the last comic, well we've got your answer right here. Stay tuned as the story unfolds to see how it ends.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Replacing The Ghost Pt. 1

2/12/2009

In case you didn't notice, last comic was the first one without Ari in it, and we have another one right here! This comic begins the next plot-developing story that is centered around Valentine's Day. This time the comics will actually line up with the holiday, unlike the CES comics which were all posted a week late. Enjoy and stay tuned because I know you are confused.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: So That's How This Webcomic Is Run...

2/10/2009

This comic really illustrates why I can even call this comic "art". Its not meant to look realistic or serious, actually I don't want you to take it seriously at all. Its meant to make people laugh and I would like to think that its highly stylized look helps that. Of course, I think that the look of the comics has been improving since the first one, but that really isn't the point for me.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: A Slight Hyperbole

2/8/2009

Its only a very slight hyperbole.
~Ryan Stevens

Webpage Update + New Comic: A Look Into The Mind Of...

2/6/2009

So if you have been wondering this whole time what that asian guy's name was, here you go, this comic tells you. I'm sure you noticed the new website design by now, its more psychadelic and a little more professional-looking. Not that professional is what I'm going for, but now at least there aren't an absurd amount of borders everywhere. The structure of the website really hasn't changed though.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Its About Time They Got A Game

2/4/2009

I'm feeling pretty sure that most people don't know what Armored Core is, its a very unpopular and unknown game from Japan about huge mechs that blow each other up. The first game was made a decade ago on the Playstation 1, and was highly praised as an amazing game. Since then the company has continued the series with a series of thirteen games! The new games rarely add new content and normally really suck, but addicts who played the first one have been buying the new games year after year, hoping that the game will rise to its former glory (I'm one of these people). The most recent games for the next-gen systems are actually pretty good compared to the older ones, but the games still feel designed for the old fans. The games have an insane learning curve and are very difficult, which keeps new players far, far away. And the part system used to build mechs is not very accesible to people who don't enjoy tracking statistics in their free time. Nonetheless, you should go buy it so that From software will make more!
~Ryan Stevens

Webpage Enhancement + Comic Update

2/4/2009

Alright, the website has undergone a very slight modification today with the addition of a "favicon". Whats a favicon you ask? Look at the tab your viewing this webpage under. See the little icon? That is a favicon. Its a 16x16 pixel gif file, although it can be other file types. Because its a gif it can be a repeating animation, which is cool because I could make it really noticable and attention-getting. A link tag in the head makes it appear and it has to be titled "favicon.ico" on the server for IE (big surprise). Woo for random trivia.

I'm sure at least one person out there is also interested in knowing when new comics will start appearing, well worry not, for new comics are coming tomorrow. Actually I guess it would be today since I'm writing this at 3 AM, but when I wake up, the first thing I will do is post that new comic.
~Ryan Stevens

No New Comic?!

1/28/2009

Yes, its true, the comic is going to go on hiatus for a bit while I write some new material. I have comics sketched far into the future, just not drawn digitally, that takes more time to do. Hopefully new comics will start appearing in about a week if all goes well. Subcribe to the RSS feed and you won't need to check the website every day!
~Ryan Stevens

Band Website

1/27/2009

In addition to drugs and video games, I am also a lover of music, particularly blues and rock. I can express my love of drugs and video games (and humor) through this webcomic, and I express my love of music through my band, The Benchmen. We play blues, jazz, and funk inspired music, and we all love a good classic rock song. If your musical interests intersect these, check out the website at www.thebenchstop.com. Maybe its a little rude of me to promote my other website through this one, since they don't relate at all to each other, but oh well.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Dude, Have You Seen Electric Sheep?

1/26/2009

Today's comic is about Electric Sheep. If you aren't up on your super awesome screen savers, I suggest checking it out. The screen saver automatically downloads new content as it runs, making it evolve as time goes by. You can vote for different sheep (which are short animations) using the keyboard, and popular sheep will appear more often. The cool thing is because the sheep are made of individual frames of fractal images, the screen saver can combine many different sheep together to make new animations based on a genetic modeling algorithm. From what I understand the process involves a great deal of math; each sheep is a non-linear function that is recursed a large number of times to produce a frame, but the function has parameters that vary with time to make it a movie. These parameters are what combine when the sheep evolve into new ones. In addition, when the screen saver runs, your computer is used to provide computing power to the whole global process, which is called "distributed computing." If all of the above didn't make any sense to you, just download it here
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Nerfed

1/25/2009

Nerf guns have honestly become ridiculous over the years, if you don't believe me look at this: Nerf Gun. Its a bolt-action, belt-fed, tripod-mounted machine gun that happens to shoot foam darts and be painted painted yellow. Sometimes I think the Nerf corporation is secretly training child soldiers.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Kids, This Is Why You Don't Do Drugs

1/23/2009

Whew, the CES adventure comes to a close as our heroes return home. I am quite proud of the artwork for this comic, the characters look well proportioned and natural. I think I'm going to try and make the characters look like this from now on, so they will actually look consistent from comic to comic. That will be nice for a change.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Stranded In The Desert

1/22/2009

Attention all drug users: my comic for today is extra psychedelic, so please indulge in your drug of choice prior to viewing. Failing to do so may severely inhibit the overall trippiness and enjoyment of it. If you aren't in the above category, look at the comic as if you were on drugs for extra entertainment.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Road Trippin'

1/20/2009

The trip to CES takes an unexpected turn for our heroes as they return from Vegas. Check it out for a quick laugh.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Curse You Bill Gates!

1/19/2009

This is the first comic that features characters other than the three main ones, although most of them are just the back of heads. The border problem in IE has been fixed, apparently web developers consider it common knowlege that browsers put borders around image links. The code is just a img { border: 0 } in CSS.
~Ryan Stevens

Arrrrrrchive

1/18/2009

Hey guys the comic archive is up, so if you want to check out a specific comic again, check it out. Well, I only have six comics right now so they should'nt be too hard to find, but rest easy knowing I'm working to save you unnecessary clicks. If any of you have dial up you will thank me.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: What Happens In Vegas...

1/17/2009

Today's comic is now up, be sure to check it out. I recently discovered an issue with IE (not suprisingly) where the title of the webpage has an ugly border around it. I should probably get around to fixing it this weekend, if anyone who actually views this webpage uses IE. If you do still use IE, I have one thing to say to you: Get Firefox. Till next time.
~Ryan Stevens

New Comic: Preparing For CES

1/16/2009

Yay for plot development! The next few comics are going to be about a trip to CES, which is the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Now, I know CES was last weekend, so these comics are a week late, but I swear it was going on when I drew them! Anyway, use your imagination and pretend in the world of the comic that it takes place this weekend. Stay tuned for more.
~Ryan Stevens

The Homepage Is Now Up

1/15/2009

Alright guys, the homepage is now officially up, along with the RSS feed. Here I will post the newest Unit Two news, along with comic updates, relavent story facts, or any other interesting tidbits I find in my travels. Hopefully I will have the archive up very shortly, although I only have four comics at the moment. If your reading this thanks for the support, and keep reading!
